Watering Down the Truth

A generation or two ago people drank water because it was part of their diet. When they were thirsty they drank more, or had some tea. But somewhere after the 1980s the health experts and their imitators started to tell us how much healthier we would be if we only drank more water. As water was supposedly free from the tap many people took to this advice. But is there much evidence to back up the benefits of drinking more water, or was is just pre-preparation for the bottled water trend?

Actually, our ancestors probably drank a reasonable amount of water, largely because they couldn’t fill up on flavoured milk, latte and soft drinks. They probably ate a lot less sugar too. These day we are finding the need to return to this healthier option. But we might make the mistake of thinking that just adding water to our otherwise poor diet will help. In truth, we need to adjust our entire approach, not just add one healthy ingredient.

Individual Water requirements

Water needs change due to exercise, the environment and your height/weight. 2 litres a day isn’t a bad estimate, but you might need more depending on your lifestyle. If you are exercise it is good to keep a water bottle handy.

Water Health Benefits.

We have been told that water flushes toxins out of our body. This a half-truth; your kidneys flush out toxins, and require water to do this properly. Lack of water prevents out body’s from properly flushing out toxins.

Too Much and Too Pure

Strangely, perfectly pure water will wash out essential micro-nutrients from our body. Individuals drinking pure water from the Himalaya Mountains felt poorly after a few days as their bodies lacked essential salts and other elements.

A similar problem occurs when people drink great amounts of water and consume little food. Out body needs salt and other nutrients to survive. Too much water can cause our body’s salt level to plummet, which is life threatening. Worst of all, low salt levels can be misdiagnosed as dehydration, causing us to drink more water. Have some salt and lemon juice before you drink.

If you are doing aerobics, yoga, Pilates or going for a massage we suggest drinking water earlier in the day. All things that are beneficial for our health are best when combined with other healthy practices.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. It is a milder form of gum disease that can lead to far more serious gum problems such as periodontal disease. Gingivitis can be reversed with stringent oral hygiene and perhaps some further treatment by a dentist. Left untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease, with subsequent loss of teeth and bone. Long term Gingivitis and periodontal disease has also been linked to circulation problems and increased risk of strokes.

Signs of Gingivitis:

Gingivitis issues stem from plaque build-up. Regular brushing and flossing prevents almost all gingivitis issues and subsequent problems. Powered toothbrushes seems to be more effective here than manual brushing.  Additional use of mouthwashes can also be quite beneficial. Occasionally hydrogen peroxide is used, or mouthwashes with anti-inflammatory agents and essential minerals.

Gum problems such as gingivitis should be easy to prevent or treat. See your dentist at the first sign of tender gums. Prevention today means avoiding more serious problems tomorrow.

Makeup Affecting the Skin

Makeup, like many things, varies in quality; and quality loosely translates to price. One area to watch for is toxic, or suspect, ingredients. The full list of problem substances is extensive, with the European Union banning about 1000 additives. A list of the most suspect ingredients includes:

  • Oxybenzone – Mostly found in sunscreen, sometimes in moisturisers. It apparently has a negative effect on hormones.
  • Phthalates – Found in soap, shampoo and nail polish. This affects the reproductive system.
  • Petroleum products- These are from the same source as petrol and oil. Apart from dermatitis that may be carcinogenic.
  • Formaldehyde – This is found in many cosmetics, as well as plastic goods and carpets. It is thought to be carcinogenic, to aggravate allergies, and tends to cause physical and mental fatigue. New carpet/new car smell is largely formaldehyde.
  • Fragrance/synthetic fragrance – Unless the fragrance is specified it is an unknown factor. There could be 100 chemical in the scent, all of which are an unknown risk.
  • Toluene – Used to make nail polish apply smoothly. This is less of a risk if not inhaled; use in a well-ventilated area.

Ingredients in skin care products can get into our bodies and affect us. It is best to avoid anything suspect, and slightly safer to stick with better quality products and established companies. Yet even this is not fool proof. European cosmetic products have stricter guidelines compared to the USA, but there are almost certainly chemical hazards not yet uncovered. Avoid anything that is the obvious cause of a problem, and try eliminating products if you find yourself suffering allergies of feeling physical or mentally fatigued.

Wedding Makeup Sydney

Bridal makeup uses higher quality products, which tend to be lower risk. One reason for a trail makeup session is to look for complication. Allergic reactions are very rare, these products have been used and retained because they have proved safe, but it is best to be sure.

Great looking lashes are part of our beauty routine. But they don’t exist in isolation. We want great skin and hair too, and anything else that makes it all fit together. Today we will look at some skin essentials.

The basic advice that previous generations gave us tends to be mostly right. Cut back on sugar and fat while eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. We could re phrase this to say eat unprocessed food and stick to the natural variety. Processed food is mostly full of unhealthy additives, though there are exceptions.

Several health food shops sell powdered forms of beets, kale and other vegetables. This is processed, but the powders seem fine for blended drinks. Add these to breakfast, a time we usually don’t eat vegetables.

Chocolate has an undeserved reputation. This is one of the few times our parents didn’t have the full story. Processed chocolate of the past was (as often still is) full of sugar, even as the cocoa ingredient was actually good for us. Eat dark chocolate instead. It contains a lot of antioxidants and little sugar. You will feel better, have lower blood pressure, and maybe even think a little better. Raw Cacao powder is unprocessed cocoa, and it even healthier than chocolate.

Cook with healthy oil, like cold pressed olive oil. The health problems once thought to be connected to chocolate (acne, clogged pores, clogged arteries…etc.) look to have been the result of trans-fat and vegetable oil (which is not made from vegetables). Look for healthy oils, and keep them below their smoke point, the temperature where they break down. Put extra virgin olive oil on salads and watch your skin problems steadily clear.

Drink water. The most obvious thing, but essential. Our Australian water supplies tend to be quite good, so we take water for granted. Many countries are not so lucky. If you want you can buy charcoal filtering for tap water, and use a UV light for further purification. Either way, water is inexpensive, so make use of it.

Herbal teas are good. There are countless varieties. Try them and find the ones you like; or find the ones that treat the issues you have to deal with. Green tea and white tea are especially healthy; find a way to drink these daily.

Look after your skin. After all, a healthy appearance should reflect a healthy lifestyle.

Great eyelashes make all the difference to our appearance. Our eyes are one of the first features that everybody notices. But lashes are even better when the rest us looks and feel great too.

GOLDEN TREE – Thai Massage Epping

Some advice on regular good feelings.

  • Breathe through your nose. This seems obvious but many people breathe through their mouth. Nose breathing increases Nitric oxide, which put us in a better mood, significantly improves our health and increases the benefits of exercise. If you can breathe through your mouth at night most snoring problems disappear.
  • Eat chocolate. Dark chocolate with minimal sugar actually lowers tooth decay, decreases weight gain and won’t cause acne. It also seems to put us in a good mood. Avoid sugary processed chocolate which really is unhealthy.
  • Value people more. There are about seven billion people in the world; don’t be limited to your own myopic view. It might be hard for the self-centred to understand, but we feel better as a small part of a large crowd in an infinite cosmos than we do as the centre of a self-created illusion.
  • Dress up to look good, whether it is classy apparel or sporty beachwear. You don’t need a reason, just be alive.
  • Find tasks that take 5 minutes, and do a few every day. It feels like you getting a lot done.
  • Laugh and Hum. These have been shown to make us feel better.
  • Use scented oils to put yourself in a better mood.
  • Get up to watch the Sun rise after a good night sleep; especially good if you have a day worth looking forward to. If you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep then watching the Sun rise will help with the next night.

Thai Massage Epping

A regular massage can make all the difference to us. Sometime we can change our lifestyle and feel better. As other times we need a massage to help deal with the things we cannot change, the inevitable  stresses and responsibilities of our existence. With the right attitude we can recognize these as a main component of life rather than a detraction from it. We should not normally be feeling the fatal stress of life and death, but the exciting stress of competitive sports or video games. Live life this way.

Most effects of acupuncture massage are good, but some are a reaction to an underlying issue. The effect isn’t bad; it’s normal, given that the individual isn’t in absolutely perfect health. If we were in perfect health we wouldn’t have gone for a massage!

Sometimes things seem to get a little worse before they feel better. Make no mistake, they are actually getting better, it just feels uncomfortable at first; like losing a bad habit or giving up an addiction.

 Symptoms – Massage Burwood

Sometimes the very symptoms we went to have treated seem to get worse. This is termed a healing crisis. Your body is returning to correct functioning, and you healing systems is starting to work. You are probably experiencing heightened sensitivity, which means you notice bodily sensations that were previously in the background. You are also probably loosening muscles that you previously held tight. This can be simultansously uncomfortable and gratifying. Ever go on a skiing and feel sore because of all those muscles you don’t usually use? You muscles will be better for the experience, and there can be a gratification in this tiredness.

Tiredness – Massage Concord

It is not uncommon to feel fatigue after a massage.  Many people feel more energy, especially if they are regular patients. But after the first few sessions you might well feel tired.  This is neither unpleasant or a cause for concern. The tiredness feels like a continuation of what you felt during the massage. After a bath a nights rest you will better than your usual self.

Soreness – Acupuncture and Massage Homebush.

Were this only acupuncture it would seems obvious to the naïve- of course sticking things into me will make me sore; I’m surprised it isn’t worse! But the point is the treatment is helping. Like the recently exercised muscles the soreness is a sign of improvement.

Massage and acupuncture might be considered alternative aprouches by some, but they are very effective for many conditions, or just for feeling a lot better. Try an alternative to your present lifestyle, and find something new.
